Youth Programs

Junior Curlers

A Junior is defined by the United States Curling Association as ages 14-21.
A Youth is defined by the United States Curling Association as ages 13 and under.
The Rochester Curling Club welcomes young people 8 to 21 years old to the junior program.

Our club's junior program gives instruction and coaching to all levels of juniors.  We have three groups that are designed to be age and skill level appropriate.

Ice Chips

The ice chips are for our youngest members, generally under 9 and most typically the children of adult members (but that is not required!).  We have special 'lite' stones that are just the right weight for this group.  We teach the ice chips the fundamentals of the game and the skills required to play in an age appropriate level.  Skills are usually practiced with only half the sheet of ice.

Ice Cubes

As the players skill, age and desire for competition grows, so does their progression into this group.  The 'Cubes' are generally about 9 to 12 years old, depending on skill and desire they may join this group sooner or stay with it longer - it is really a case by case call.  Here the youth learn to throw the full size rocks the full length of the sheet.  More skill and accuracy is praciticed as well as more competition.  This age group will start to learn about bonspiels and possibly participate in a few during the course of the season.

Juniors or Teen group

These are curlers from about age 13 to 21.  Instruction and skills development is geared toward the increased capabilities of these teens.  Some of our juniors become quite competitive and participate in numerous bonspiels while some play just to enjoy the social aspects of the sport.  We strive to meet the youth where they are and try to develop individualized goals with them.
